Nigeria’s govt has indefinitely suspended Twitter’s operations in the country.
In a declaration, which was posted on the ministry’s official Twitter handle upon Friday, the government accused Tweets of allowing its system to be used “for activities which are capable of undermining Nigeria’s business existence. ”
Some stated the irony of launching the ban on Tweets, with one person replying: “You’re using Twitter to postpone Twitter? Are you not crazy? ”
The suspension arrives two days after Twitter erased a tweet by Leader Muhammadu Buhari that was broadly perceived as offensive.
In that twitter update on Tuesday, the Nigerian leader threatened to deal with individuals in the country’s southeast, whom he blames for the continuing attacks on public facilities in the region.
The tweet had been deleted Wednesday after several Nigerians flagged it in order to Twitter and the platform stated it had violated the policy on abusive behavior.
A Twitter trend “Thank God For VPN” went viral on the app as numerous Nigerians celebrate their capability to circumvent the Twitter prohibit, through the use of a virtual personal network (VPN).
Users that are logged into a secured Server can access public systems while their internet connection continues to be anonymous and encrypted.
